DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK ---------------------- At 200 PM MST (2100 UTC), the center of Hurricane Rachel was located near latitude 19.4 North, longitude 109.5 West. Rachel is moving slowly toward the west near 3 mph (6 km/h) and this slow west to west-northwest motion is expected the next couple of days. Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 120 mph (195 km/h) with higher gusts. Rachel is a category 3 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Additional strengthening is forecast the next day or so, before some gradual weakening this weekend. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 40 miles (65 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 150 miles (240 km). The estimated minimum central pressure is 950 mb (28.06 inches). HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND ---------------------- SURF: Swells generated by Rachel will affect the coast of west-central Mexico and the Baja California Peninsula through the end of the week. These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions. Please consult products from your local weather office.
