.SHORT TERM...
(Today through Sunday)
Issued at 227 AM EDT Sat Aug 22 2026

Currently: Much quieter tonight compared to this time yesterday. A
few isolated showers and thunderstorms linger in the vicinity of
Columbus and south of Macon but these are on the downward trend. A
surface front bisects the forecast area with drier air starting to
filter in behind it as noted by latest WV imagery. Temperatures are
still warm thanks to high cirrus with readings in the upper 60s to
low 70s. Low clouds and patchy fog are likely this morning with
improvements expected at or shortly after sunrise.

Precipitation Trends: The surface front will continue to push
through the forecast area today as a large upper troughing digs
eastward towards the Atlantic Coast. Showers and thunderstorms will
largely be focused along and south of the frontal boundary for this
afternoon -- namely along and south of a line from Columbus to
Sandersville. Similar to previous days, frequent lightning, gusty
winds, and heavy rainfall will accompany any storm. A secondary
front will push through tonight and a stray shower or thunderstorm
could accompany this feature. However, the brunt of the activity
is likely to remain to our north. Dry conditions areawide are
expected for Sunday afternoon and evening.

Heat Trends: Drier air and lower dewpoints behind the front will
lend to less oppressive heat for North Georgia today and areawide on
Sunday. Daytime temperatures will still largely remain in the 90s
but dewpoints in the 60s will make being outside a little less
miserable this weekend. Forecast highs today and Sunday will rise
into the low to mid 90s with temperatures in the 80s for the higher
elevations. Overnight temperatures are forecast to fall into the 60s
to low 70s each night/early morning.

.LONG TERM...
(Sunday night through Friday)
Issued at 227 AM EDT Sat Aug 22 2026

The long term begins with an upper-level longwave trough set up over
our region that will remain in place and result in drier conditions
through the first half of next week. As drier conditions filter into
the CWA, it will set up a nice run of drier days, with slightly
cooler mornings, providing us with favorable conditions for outdoor
activities. Additionally, precipitation chances will be limited
through at least Tuesday, with dry mid to upper level conditions
spreading across the region in combination with lower precipitable
water values between 0.5-1 inch.

By mid-week, the axis of the trough lifts out of the CWA toward the
northeast, and the pattern will become more zonal, allowing for an
influx of moisture from the Gulf, increasing our precipitation
chances and humidity by mid-week. This will result in a return to
the typical August diurnal thunderstorm pattern we are accustomed to
as we move into the latter half of next week. Daytime temperatures
will likely climb back into the low to mid-90s, with possible triple-
digit heat indices for the second half of the workweek.
