.UPDATE...
Issued at 621 PM CDT Fri Aug 22 2025

The strongest push of cold air advection resides from
southeastern ND into the central Red River Valley up towards the
Lake of the Woods at this hour. Winds behind the front have been
mostly shy of wind advisory criteria, with a few stations such
as here in Grand Forks touching 45 mph. However, will keep the
wind advisory going until 8 PM, as winds are higher now then
they were earlier today, even if advisory level gusts are very
isolated. Otherwise, the forecast remains on track.

.DISCUSSION...
Issued at 331 PM CDT Fri Aug 22 2025

...Synopsis...

H5 upper low moves east this afternoon with surface high pressure
filling in from the northwest. Much cooler temperatures prevail in
the wake of the cold front, along with much lower dew points and
relative humidity. A fall-like pattern prevails today through
Monday, with highs in the 60s on Saturday and Sunday and in the 70s
for Monday. Warmer temps gradually return starting Tuesday with
highs approaching 80 degrees by Wednesday. With the exception of
some light showers around Lake of the Woods today and tonight,
precipitation chances will be minimal through the middle of next
week.

...Gusty Winds Continue this Afternoon Through the Weekend...

Pressure gradients are combining with CAA to bring gusty west to
northwest winds into the area this afternoon. Winds are expected to
remain elevated through much of the weekend, as the low stalls just
south of Hudson Bay, thus keeping pressure gradients somewhat high.
Sustained winds of 20-25 mph are expected, along with gusts to 40
mph. Strongest winds will be during the afternoon with peak mixing;
however, pressure gradients will likely keep sustained winds in the
15-20 mph range overnight tonight across most of the area. For
Saturday night, the highest winds are expected in northwest
Minnesota.

.AVIATION /00Z TAFS THROUGH 00Z SATURDAY/...
Issued at 621 PM CDT Fri Aug 22 2025

VFR conditions this evening, with gusty winds. Wind gusts will
subside overnight, becoming more sporadic. However, gusts will
pick back up by Saturday afternoon, albeit not quite as strong
as we saw today. VFR ceilings will lower on Saturday, with some
areas, particularly KBJI seeing MVFR much of Saturday
morning/afternoon. How far west these MVFR ceilings extend is
uncertain, but they could sneak into places such as KGFK and
KTVF, but predictability was too low at this time to put enter
that into the TAF.
