Rangeland Fire Danger Statement
National Weather Service Sioux Falls SD
144 PM CDT Wed Oct 28 2026

.DISCUSSION...

Minimum afternoon humidity values above 40 percent today and
tomorrow keeps the Grassland Fire Danger low to moderate for the
next couple of days. A cold front continues to pass through the
forecast area this afternoon, turning winds to the northwest behind
it. Scattered showers with some isolated thunderstorms mixed in will
develop over eastern South Dakota into western Minnesota out ahead
of this cold front. The main fire weather concerns in the strongest
storms will be cloud to ground lightning and wind gusts up to 60
miles per hour. Winds will then become light and variable overnight
tonight due to a high pressure center moving in.

...MODERATE FIRE DANGER...

The Grassland Fire Danger Index will reach the moderate
category this afternoon. Marginal weather conditions or
lowering moisture content of grasses, and other dry organic
material on the ground, indicate that there is some potential
for a fire to spread. Any outdoor burning should be closely
monitored.

OUTLOOK FOR THURSDAY AFTERNOON...The Grassland Fire Danger Index
will reach the low category.

The grassland fire danger product reflects fire danger for native
grasses. It is not intended for cured agricultural crops, nor
will it reflect conditions in road ditches which have been mowed.

...LOW FIRE DANGER...

The Grassland Fire Danger Index will reach the low category
this afternoon. Favorable weather conditions or a high moisture
content of grasses, and other dry organic material on the
ground, indicate that the probability of a fast moving fire is
low. Outdoor burning under these conditions can usually be
with reasonable safety precautions, but should be monitored.
