052 FNUS63 KFSD 042041 RFDFSD Rangeland Fire Danger Statement National Weather Service Sioux Falls SD 341 PM CDT Sat Oct 4 2025 .DISCUSSION... Issued at 252 PM CDT Sat Oct 4 2025 Hot, dry and windy conditions will lead to widespread High to Very High Grassland Fire Danger today. Afternoon minimum humidity of 27-40%, with driest conditions in south central South Dakota. However, south winds gusting as high as 35 to 40 MPH will overcome the marginal humidity levels, especially where grasses are more cured or crops are ready for harvest. With this in mind, please use caution with machinery that gets very hot or creates sparks. Breezy conditions continue overnight and into Sunday. Areas west of I-29 can expect gusts of 30-35 mph overnight and into Sunday late morning. Areas to the east could see gusts of 35-40 mph in to the early afternoon. Humidity levels will fall to 30-40%, and keep the Grassland Fire Danger in the High category in many areas, so continued caution is advised. Through the day Sunday a cold front moves through the region. Temperatures will begin to cool Sunday, and be in the 60s for Monday. Dry conditions with cooler temperatures and lighter winds are expected for next week, allowing for less dangerous harvesting conditions. People are urged to exercise extreme care with respect to outdoor activities that could cause grass fires. Avoid equipment that can cause sparks near dry grass or brush. Do not toss cigarettes on the ground. Report new fires quickly to the nearest fire department or law enforcement office.
