Area Forecast Discussion

.DISCUSSION...

KEY MESSAGES:

- Northerly winds will keep smoke over the area through Wednesday.

- Cold front looks to bring scattered showers/thunderstorms early
today (mainly northeast zones) with much cooler conditions by
  Wednesday.

- Another cold front expected Thursday with stronger winds.

WEATHER PATTERN OVERVIEW:
A fairly strong closed low pressure system will swing through
central Canada today, as it tracks toward the Great Lakes. This
will drop the cold front into Montana. The northerly flow will
keep Canadian smoke over the area through at least Wednesday.

A few showers or thunderstorms are also possible today, mainly
across the northeaster zones. Winds will increase slightly this
evening for a few hours. Cooler temperatures are expected
beginning on Wednesday.

A second and stronger shortwave and front will drop into the
region on Thursday. Tighter pressure gradient with stacked low
over southern Manitoba will bring stronger winds into northeast
Montana. The orientation of the low suggest a mostly dry front,
but with cooler temperatures, fire weather conditions are not yet
a concern.

The remainder of the forecast period has high pressure moving out
of the northern Plains by the end of the week, and upper ridge
pushing back across the northern Rockies.

FORECAST CONFIDENCE & DEVIATIONS:
Increased pops for today as the NBM has been underdoing the
precipitation lately. Also blended the NBM90 into the winds for
today and tonight.

Rest of forecast went mainly with NBM.
