A National Weather Service storm survey team from the National
Weather Service office in Columbia, SC, determined that straight
line winds associated with a line of severe thunderstorms was
responsible for the extensive tree damage and minor structural
damage that occurred in eastern Chester County Sunday evening.
Maximum wind gusts were estimated to be around 70 to 80 mph.

In Chester County, the more substantial damage began near
Landsford and extended to the southeast through the Fort Lawn and
Great Falls areas. In this area, SCDOT reported at least 45 trees
down on roadways. In addition, there were 2 gas station canopies
that were tipped over, one in Great Falls and another in Fort
Lawn. The canopy in Fort Lawn landed on a vehicle occupied by 2
people who were not injured. One area with extensive tree damage
was along Jackson Road, adjacent to Fishing Creek Reservoir, where
numerous large hardwood trees were uprooted and many large
branches snapped. A large uprooted tree fell on a vehicle on
Jackson Road.

The straight line wind damage then continued into western
Lancaster County.
