Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Gray ME
235 PM EDT Sat Aug 30 2025

.SYNOPSIS...
An upper level low pressure will slowly pinwheel across the
Northeast through Monday. Scattered afternoon showers and likely
again Sunday, becoming less more likely to shift east of the
area by Monday. Some seasonable days and chilly nights are
expected through Monday night before a return to normal through
the rest of the week. Once high pressure firmly takes control
Monday the forecast remains dry until Thursday night or Friday
when the next frontal boundary attempts to cross the area.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Upper low over SE Quebec continues to pivot NE tonight. It will
transition into the overall longwave pattern aloft into Sunday,
so its cool and cloudy influence is short-lived.

It remains cloudy across the mountains tonight as the backside
of the merged trough carries low level moisture into the region.
Elsewhere, mostly clear skies develop into the late evening
hours. As clouds thin, expect good radiational cooling overnight
with most locations dipping into the mid 40s.

&&

.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
Drier NW flow behind the departing disturbance will provide a
sunnier day on Sunday. Shallow cumulus should develop late
morning, while a sprinkle can`t be ruled out towards Jackman
and the western ME mountains. Overall expect footprint of clouds
to be much smaller than Saturday.

Overnight, mostly clear skies and calm winds will again promote
a cool night as high pressure moves into the Northeast. Went
lower than NBM guidance on some typical cool spots with lows in
the lower 50s to mid 40s.

&&

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Key Message: Temps below normal to start the period but turning
more seasonable thru the remainder of the week. Continued dry
until the last week frontal passage.

Impacts: No significant weather impacts anticipated beyond
maintaining/deepening drought conditions.

Forecast Details: The core of the cold anomalies begin to lift
out Mon...so moderating conditions are expected thru the
remainder of the week. Surface high pressure will be hanging on
thru Mon night however...and I did adjust some of the interior
valleys down a few degrees to account for lingering radiational
cooling effects. I also continued to add valley fog in the
forecast as long as high pressure is in control. While we have
been very dry...the recent rain...evapotranspiration...and
climatological peak of radiation fog all suggest at least patchy
fog possible.

The main story continues to be the lack of rain in the forecast.
After the drink yesterday there is not much rain to speak of
until at least Thu night or Fri. A cold front will cross the
region but forcing will be weakening with time and by no means
is this a lock for wetting rains. Drought conditions may
continue to expand.

&&

.AVIATION /18Z SATURDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Short Term...SHRA, maybe a rumble of TS, through late afternoon
for interior terminals. Some SHRA makes it towards RKD through
mid afternoon. Cumulus deck deteriorates this evening with
mostly clear skies outside of the mountains. This may lead to
valley fog development after midnight. MVFR takes hold along
the US/CAN border overnight into Sunday morning. Trend should be
towards VFR for Sunday. Clear skies Sunday night, but valley
fog may again develop.

Long Term...Generally VFR conditions thru the extended. Local
IFR or lower in valley locations where fog is expected. Given
the dry weather this may stay limited to HIE and LEB.

&&

.MARINE...
Short Term...Breezy today as upper low pressure pivots from SE
Quebec to eastern ME tonight. Wave heights build Sunday, but
remain 1 to 3 ft for the coastal waters.

Long Term...Ridging and surface high pressure will remain in
control and dominate weather thru the end of next week. As a
result winds and seas are expected to remain below SCA
thresholds.
