.DISCUSSION...
Although scattered showers will continue to impact portions of
northeast AL early this morning, conditions will not be as
favorable for widespread precipitation today (compared to
yesterday), with just a few thunderstorms possible this afternoon
and mainly focused across northwest AL. Although this activity
should dissipate shortly after sunset, redevelopment of showers
and thunderstorms may occur across much of the region early
Thursday morning as the low-level jet strengthens ahead of an
approaching cold front. The weaker/southwestern portion of the
cold front will drift slowly southeastward across the TN Valley on
Thursday, but should stall to our northwest. Nevertheless, a few
clusters of thunderstorms may spread off the front and into
northeast AL during the afternoon, and some of this activity could
be strong-severe in intensity. Smoke dispersion indices will be
in the fair-generally good range today, with transport winds of
5-10 MPH and mixing heights around 6 kft. Due to an increase in
transport winds, dispersion will improve to the good category on
Thursday. In the extended portion of the forecast, we still
anticipate a brief period of dry conditions on Thursday night and
Friday, before showers and thunderstorms return Friday
night/Saturday (ahead of a stronger cold front). The intrusion of
cooler/drier air early next week will be short-lived, as moisture
return will lead to additional chances for rain beginning Monday
night.
Fog potential over the next few days: Areas of fog (with patchy
dense fog) will continue across western and central portions of
the forecast area early this morning. Conditions will also be
favorable for fog development early Friday morning.
Potential for Red Flag Conditions: None at this time.
