...ON THIS DATE IN WEATHER HISTORY...

In 1911, one day after invading the Northern and Central
Plains with what many considered the most dangerous
Arctic Outbreak on record, the infamous "Great Blue
Norther" tightened its grip on Kansas with single digit
temperatures. Wichita`s low of 9 degrees marked the
city`s earliest autumn occurrence of a single degree
temperature.

In 1970, the deadliest tropical cyclone in history
occurred when the Great Bhola Cyclone barreled into East
Pakistan. (Present day Bangladesh.) The category 4
cyclone`s one minute sustained winds reached around 140
mph. The severe cyclone struck during an above average
lunar high tide, which contributed greatly to a storm
surge that reached around 20 feet. Around 500,000 people
were killed with around $490 million damage.
