.DISCUSSION...
Issued at 154 PM CDT Sun Oct 11 2026

Near Record Warmth & Dry Conditions Through Tuesday...
Mid-level warm air advection will continue to strengthen a
prominent upper-level ridge centered over the mid-Mississippi
Valley, yielding near-record warmth across the region over the
next two days. Afternoon high temperatures are forecast to top
out around 90 degrees on Monday across central and southeast
Illinois, with similar warmth persisting Tuesday for areas east
of the Illinois River. A strong 850800 mb warm nose, with
temperatures approaching 20C, will maintain a robust capping
inversion across central Illinois, ensuring dry weather through
early Tuesday evening.

Active Pattern & Precipitation Chances Wednesday and Thursday...
A series of mid-level shortwaves tracking across southern
Canada will gradually push the low-to-mid level baroclinic zone
south toward the Midwest late Tuesday into Wednesday. A modest
shortwave propagating along this boundary will enhance a low-
level jet to our west Tuesday night, initiating convective
activity that will spread into west-central Illinois overnight.
Modest instability (MLCAPE around 500 J/kg) paired with strong
deep-layer shear (around 40 kt) will support a low-end severe
threat late Tuesday night, primarily across portions of the
lower Illinois River Valley, before instability wanes further
east.

The frontal boundary is projected to stall across central
Illinois Wednesday into Thursday, bringing recurring
opportunities for showers and thunderstorms. Temperatures will
display a sharp gradient across the boundary, ranging from the
low-to-mid 70s north to the 80s south. LREF total QPF from
Tuesday night through Friday morning is expected to average 0.90
to 1.25 inches across central Illinois, with a 20-30%
probability of exceeding 1.50 inches between the I-74 and I-70
corridors (highest probabilities west of Springfield). NBM
numbers, meanwhile, paint slightly higher totals of 1.30 to 2.00
inches through Friday morning. Given the recent dry spell, the
overall concern for flooding is low.

Cooler Pattern Change Friday into the Weekend...
By Friday, the boundary will sag south of the area, leaving
only lingering morning showers before strong surface high
pressure builds southeast from the Northern Plains. This
shifting pattern will introduce a significantly cooler air mass,
with high temperatures dropping into the 60s on Friday and
upper 50s to lower 60s for Saturday. Light winds and clearing
skies beneath the surface ridge axis will allow overnight lows
to fall into the 30s Friday and Saturday nights, bringing the
potential for the first widespread frost of the season.

.AVIATION /06Z TAFS THROUGH 06Z TUESDAY/...
Issued at 1204 AM CDT Mon Oct 12 2026

VFR conditions to prevail through the period, with any ceilings
being high-based and early in the period. Winds trend more
toward the southwest early Monday morning and should increase to
around 10 knots or so by mid morning. Late in the period, a low
level jet will strengthen from western Missouri into northern
Illinois, with any LLWS before 06z most likely at KPIA/KBMI.
