.KEY MESSAGES...

- A strong cool front moves through today with a chance for
  showers and a few thunderstorms across eastern portions of
  north central Nebraska. Highs will range from the mid 60s
  northeast to the low 80s far southwest.

- Another warm up Thursday brings above normal temperatures and
  elevated fire weather concerns before cooler temperatures
  return for the weekend.

.SHORT TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...

A closed upper low will drop through northeastern Minnesota
today, this will drive a strong cold front through the area
today, and bring an area of frontogenesis focused in the H7 to
H6 layer across eastern portions of north central Nebraska this
morning, with a 20 to 40 percent chance for showers and a few
thunderstorms, with a slight chance lingering until 21Z. With
H85 temperatures cooling to near 10C in the northeast this
afternoon, highs will only reach the mid 60s under mainly cloudy
skies. Southwest Nebraska will reach the upper 70s to lower 80s
with a mostly sunny sky, and a breezy northerly wind. Tonight,
weak high pressure will traverse the area with skies partly
cloudy. Lows on the cool side from the mid to upper 40s north
central and central Nebraska, with low to mid 50s southwest.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...

Thursday will be the warmest day of the week as another strong
cold front drops through the Dakotas. Ahead of the cold front,
winds will turn west to northwest in the afternoon, with breezy
northwest winds across the western Sandhills and north central.
Highs to reach the mid and upper 80s west to near 80 in the
northeast. With dewpoints falling into the mid 40s across the
west, afternoon humidity will fall to as low as 20 percent.
Fuels are not yet expected to be very receptive over the western
Sandhills, though wind gusts to 30 mph and low humidity will
lead to elevated fire conditions.

Thursday night, the strong cold front will move through, with
surface high pressure building in. Lows may reach 40 degrees in
the northwest Sandhills. A slight chance of showers across the
south after midnight.

Friday will be the coolest day, with highs in the 60s. Saturday
and Sunday, the upper trough will move through the great lakes
with height rises across the central U.S. Temperatures will
return to the upper 60s to upper 70s Saturday and the 70s to
near 80 Sunday. Sunday night into Monday, a shortwave trough
will cross a broad upper ridge across the region, with only a
slight chance for showers and a few thunderstorms. Highs Monday
and Tuesday slightly warmer from the upper 70s to low 80s,
which is near normal.

.AVIATION /12Z TAFS THROUGH 12Z THURSDAY/...

Scattered showers and a few thunderstorms will continue this
morning across the eastern half of north central Nebraska. IFR
ceilings are forecast to move into north central Nebraska,
including the KVTN terminal by 15Z behind a cold front. MVFR
CIGs then persist until 21Z. A gradual improvement back to VFR
is expected by late Wednesday afternoon. An MVFR ceiling and
visibility may develop toward 12Z Thursday at the KLBF terminal,
though confidence is low.

Winds remain northerly through the valid period, with gusts of
20KT this afternoon.
