.DISCUSSION...
Fire weather concerns quickly tick up this week with near to above
normal temperatures and breezy winds. Near-critical conditions are
possible for southwest Nebraska into the Panhandle each day Sunday
and Tuesday with additional elevated concerns possible.
Sunday...surface high pressure will settle southeast of the area
as shortwave ridging builds in from the west. Ahead of an
approaching surface trough/cool front, gusty southwest winds will
limit humidity recovery early Sunday and give the area a head-
starton the humidity drop. With general downsloping winds during
the day, afternoon highs will climb into the middle to upper 70s
or 15-20F above normal. With the warming and drying from the
westerly winds, expect humidity minimums to fall into the 15 to 25
percent range especially for far southern Zone 204 and far
western Zone 210. While humidity minimums are fairly confident in
occurring, confidence in seeing the necessary winds to reach Red
Flag Warning criteria for the 3-hour timeframe is limited. Winds
will flip to the northwest then north behind the boundary, passing
sometime around midday, with speeds likely to subside thereafter.
It`s likely that Red Flag Warning criteria will be met for a hour
or so but spatial coverage being limited as well as duration
potentially falling short preclude headlines at this time. Will
continue to highlight near-critical for now as a result.
Tuesday...following a cooler day on Monday, a near repeat of
Sunday appears possible for Tuesday. Daytime highs climbing into
the middle to upper 70s with an approaching surface
trough/boundary to promote breezy winds will lead to elevated to
near-critical concerns across our southwestern zones. For now,
confidence is limited owing to uncertainty about magnitude of wind
gusts. Will continue to monitor going forward.
Beyond Tuesday...temperatures will largely remain near to above
normal and with dry condition likely persisting for most, believe
at least elevated fire weather concerns will exist daily through
the following weekend. The warmest days appear likely to occur
Thursday and Friday and it`s these days that concerns are highest
but for now, precise details remain low confidence at this time.
