Ice continues to gradually expand on the Great Lakes with approximately
31% ice coverage. The greatest coverage of ice remains on Lake Erie but
with limited fast ice. Ice has been generally constant west of the Lake
Erie Islands with some movement of the larger but cracked ice shield in
the central basin. Ice continues to expand on the eastern basin of Lake
Erie.
Across the Upper Great Lakes, ice is mainly confined to shoreline areas
while much of the open waters remain ice free. Fast Ice is present on
interior portions of Green Bay and Saginaw Bay and in far northern Lake
Michigan near the Straits of Mackinac. Ice continues to expand across the
southern shore of Lake Superior, especially west of the Keenweenaw
Peninsula and in Whitefish Bay. On Lake Michigan ice continues to expand
on the far north end of the lake and along the southeast shores from Gary
Indiana to near Grand Haven Michigan. On Lake Huron, ice continues to
expand on all shores.
Over the coming days, moderate ice growth is expected on Lake Superior
and northern portions of Lakes Michigan and Huron where temperatures will
tend to remain below freezing. A Heavy Freezing Spray Warning is also in
effect for most of Lake Superior through 1 PM Tuesday. Temperatures
across the southern Great Lakes will tend to fluctuate this week with
below normal temperatures on Tuesday, trending towards above normal
temperatures by Thursday. Minimal or slow ice growth is expected during
this time with temperatures hovering around normal heading into this
weekend.
