Fire Weather Planning Forecast for S MS and SE LA
National Weather Service New Orleans LA
122 AM CDT Thu Oct 29 2026

.DISCUSSION...

Dry conditions will be in place today as minimum RH values fall
to critical levels between 25 to 35 percent in southwest
Mississippi and the Baton Rouge region. Farther to the south and
east, minimum RH values will only dip to between 40 and
60 percent. Winds will remain from the east-northeast at 5 to
10 mph, resulting in conditions not quite meeting Red Flag
criteria. However, the ongoing moderate to severe drought
conditions in the region will keep the fire threat elevated
through this afternoon, and much of the region is under parish
and county-level burn bans. A wetter period of weather will begin
develop this weekend with the best rain chances occurring
Saturday afternoon through Sunday morning. Higher humidity values
of 45 to 65 percent will be in place on Friday in advance of
these rains. Overall rainfall totals should be around an inch
this weekend before drier weather moves back in for Monday.
Another chance of beneficial rain will move in on Tuesday and
Wednesday of next week when a front approaches the region. Fog
potential will increase tonight and Friday night as moisture
levels rise.
