985 FNUS56 KLOX 242211 FWFLOX Fire Weather Planning Forecast For Southwestern California National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard CA 311 PM PDT Mon Jun 24 2024 ...SLIGHT CHANCE OF THUNDERSTORMS THIS AFTERNOON WITH ISOLATED DRY LIGHTNING STRIKES POSSIBLE ACROSS INTERIOR SAN LUIS OBISPO AND SANTA BARBARA COUNTIES AS WELL AS MOUNTAINS OF VENTURA AND EASTERN LOS ANGELES COUNTIES AND EASTERN ANTELOPE VALLEY... ...ELEVATED TO BRIEF CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER CONDITIONS RETURN ACROSS INTERIOR AREAS AND SOUTHWEST SANTA BARBARA COUNTY WEDNESDAY INTO THURSDAY NIGHT DUE TO DRYING TREND WITH CONTINUED WARM TEMPERATURES AND GUSTY ONSHORE WINDS... .DISCUSSION... Subtropical moisture from remnants of former tropical cyclone Alberto remain over the region. Isolated thunderstorms occurred this morning across western Santa Barbara county and portions of San Luis Obispo County. With daytime heating and better instability, there is a 10-15 percent chance of thunderstorms this afternoon across interior portions of Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties, and the mountains of Ventura and eastern Los Angeles counties, as well as the eastern Antelope Valley. The main threats will be cloud-to-ground lightning strikes including potential fire starts (isolated dry lightning) and strong wind gusts up to 50 mph with any stronger thunderstorms. Storms will be slow moving, with any storms potentially leading to localized flooding concerns, focused across the mountains. Thunderstorm chances are expected to reduce to less than 10 percent by tonight and Tuesday. A large ridge of high pressure over the region will persist into Tuesday, continuing to bring hot conditions to the interior. High temperatures between 92 and 103 degrees will be common across the warmest valleys, lower mountains, and Antelope Valley through Tuesday. As the high pressure system weakens, there will be a gradual cooling trend across all areas Wednesday into Friday. From Wednesday into Thursday night, there will also be increasing onshore winds across the interior, with southwest to west winds gusting 25 to 45 mph, strongest in the Antelope Valley. In addition, sundowner and I-5 Corridor winds will likely return Wednesday into Thursday night, with potential wind gusts of 25 to 45 mph. The combination of a drying trend with gusty winds will bring a return of elevated to brief critical fire weather conditions across the interior and southwest Santa Barbara county where there will be an increased risk for grass fire activity. At this time, the most favored areas for brief critical fire weather conditions would include the I5 corridor as well as the Antelope Valley and western foothills.
