Fire Weather Planning Forecast For Southwestern California
National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard CA
949 AM PDT Mon Aug 10 2026

...ELEVATED TO BRIEF CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER CONDITIONS AND INCREASED RISK
FOR LARGE PLUME DOMINATED FIRES TODAY INTO TUESDAY ACROSS INTERIOR VALLEYS,
MOUNTAINS, AND DESERTS...

...INFLUX OF MONSOONAL MOISTURE WILL BRING CHANCES OF THUNDERSTORMS THROUGH
WEDNESDAY ACROSS THE MOUNTAINS AND DESERTS, WITH A VERY SMALL RISK
EXTENDING INTO ALL OF SAN LUIS OBISPO AND SANTA BARBARA COUNTIES TUESDAY
AFTERNOON INTO WEDNESDAY...

.DISCUSSION...
Widespread elevated to brief critical fire weather conditions will
continue today into Tuesday across interior valleys, mountains, and deserts due
to hot, dry, and breezy conditions. Deep mixing heights and the influx of some
monsoonal moisture/instability will lead to an increased risk for plume dominated fire
behavior today and Tuesday. Mixing heights will continue to range between
10,000 and 16,000 feet across the interior today and Tuesday. There is a 10 to 15 percent
chance of monsoonal thunderstorms this afternoon across the northern Ventura county
mountains and eastern San Gabriels/eastern Antelope Valley. Any storms
today will bring the potential for isolated dry lightning strikes and strong/erratic
outflow wind gusts of 40 to 50 mph. From tuesday into Wednesday, the monsoonal
moisture and instability are somewhat enhanced, leading to a 30-50 percent chance of
thunderstorms across the Ventura County/Santa Barbara county interior mountains and
eastern San Gabriels extneding into eastern Antelope Valley. The storms in these areas
on Tuesday and Wednesday are expected to be wetter. Enhanced upper level instability
will also bring a 5-10 percent chance of thunderstorms with isolated dry lightning
risk across the remaining portions of San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Ventura
counties on Tuesday, then mainly confined to the Central Coast on Wednesday.

Humidites over the far interior will commonly be in the 8 to 20 percent
range with fairly typical onshore winds of 10 to 25 mph with
gusts up to 20 to 35 mph in windiest areas over the interior. The best overlap
of gusty onshore winds with low humidities to bring brief critical fire weather
conditions each afternoon will be today. A gradual cooling trend is
expected today, with the potential for temperatures to reach normal or even
below normal by Wednesday and Thursday. An upper level low pressure system off
the coast could pull in some subtropical moisture into the region sometime between
Thursday and Saturday, with a 5-10 percent chance of showers and elevated
thunderstorms (with highest risk across the Central Coast). If any thunderstorms
were to develop, the main risk would be isolated dry lightning strikes.
