GUSTY ONSHORE WINDS...
.DISCUSSION...
Subtropical moisture from remnants of former tropical cyclone Alberto
remain over the region. Isolated thunderstorm activity is occurring
this morning across western Santa Barbara and western San Luis Obispo
counties. These storms have minimal rainfall, increasing the likelihood
of isolated dry lightning strikes with gusty outflow winds. With daytime
heating and better instability, the 10-20 percent chance of thunderstorms will
expand to include all of San Luis Obispo county, as well as interior
Santa Barbara county, and the mountains of Ventura and eastern
Los Angeles counties. The main threats will continue to be cloud-to-ground
lightning strikes including potential fire starts (isolated dry lightning) and
strong wind gusts up to 50 mph with any stronger thunderstorms. Storms will
be slow moving, with any storms potentially leading to localized flooding
concerns, focused across the mountains.
A large ridge of high pressure over the region will persist into Wednesday,
continuing to bring hot conditions to the interior. High temperatures between
90 and 103 degrees will be common across the warmest valleys, lower mountains,
and Antelope Valley through Wednesday. As the high pressure system weakens,
there will be a gradual cooling trend across all areas Thursday into Friday.
Sundowner and I-5 Corridor winds will also likely return Wednesday into Thursday,
with potential wind gusts of 30 to 45 mph. The combination of a drying trend with
gusty onshore winds will bring a return of elevated fire weather conditions across
the interior, where there will be an increased risk for grass fire activity.
