Updated at 555 PM CDT Thu Aug 20 2026 - Heat will continue for the remainder of this week and well into next week. - A few thunderstorms remain possible Thursday in the far southwest TX Panhandle and northwest South Plains. && .SHORT TERM... (This evening through Friday) Issued at 108 PM CDT Thu Aug 20 2026 Early afternoon vis imagery and surface obs showing mid level clouds associated with decaying showers dropping south-southeast on the east side of the upper high. At the surface a weak low was in the northeast TX Panhandle and there was a weak boundary extending to the southwest from this low which will likely be the focus for some isolated-widely scattered convection this afternoon/early evening. Temps at mid day were in the low to mid 100s in the eastern CWA with mid to upper 90s elsewhere. && .LONG TERM... (Friday night through next Wednesday) Issued at 108 PM CDT Thu Aug 20 2026 Large scale amplifying high pressure ridge will become oriented more north-south over the next few days and drift slowly eastward. This will allow temps to continue to warm. Extreme heat headlines could be needed at some point this weekend into Monday over our eastern CWA as temps will likely approach 110. This pattern is forecast to continue for the next several days and with the string of hot days persisting and at night temps not cooling as much heat related illness could become more apparent. && .AVIATION...
