.SHORT TERM...
(This afternoon through Saturday night)
Issued at 130 PM CDT Fri Aug 21 2026

Heat remains the main concern for the area through the short term
forecast. Overnight lows, particularly east of Midland and Fort
Stockton settle only into the mid to upper 70s. A few spots may stay
near 80F. Highs on Saturday move into the low to mid 100s across the
Western Low Rolling Plains/eastern Permian Basin. For this, have
issued a Heat Advisory for those northeastern counties that begins
Saturday afternoon and carries through to Sunday evening. Lows in
that area may not get below 80F Saturday night. The combination of
above normal temperatures during the day and the inability of the
land to cool off at night presents increased heat risk, especially
to those working outdoors.

A storm or two across the northern Permian Basin and southeast New
Mexico may be seen this evening as convection develops to the north
of these areas. Any storms that form would contain gusty winds,
lightning, and brief heavy rainfall. Beyond tonight however, rain
chances will be near zero through at least Sunday.

.LONG TERM...
(Sunday through Thursday)
Issued at 130 PM CDT Fri Aug 21 2026

The upper-level ridge is expected to shift east and become centered
over our region Sunday through at least Tuesday next week. This
yields afternoon highs at or above 100 degrees across most
locations, with temperatures between 105 and 110 degrees in the Big
Bend. Some portions of the northeast Permian Basin and Trans Pecos
look to reach near 105 as well. By late week, the upper-level ridge
axis shifts back to the west which allows for temperatures to cool a
few degrees. A few showers/storms are possible late next week,
though sinking motion under the ridge will limit convection.
