168 FXUS64 KMAF 061638 AFDMAF Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Midland/Odessa TX 1138 AM CDT Sun Sep 6 2026 ...New AVIATION... .KEY MESSAGES... Updated at 1137 AM CDT Sun Sep 6 2026 - Temperatures remain above normal, but very gradually decrease this week. - Isolated to scattered (10-40% chance) showers/storms are possible each day, mainly west of the Pecos River. && .SHORT TERM... (Today through Monday afternoon) Issued at 148 AM CDT Sun Sep 6 2026 High pressure centered over the southern Great Plains will advect in relatively cooler gulf air from the southeast keeping highs in the 90s over the Labor Day weekend. Afternoon and early evening showers and storms are expected west of the Pecos River though coverage will probably be less than that seen the previous few days. The best rain chances once again will be in the higher elevations of the Davis Mountains and adjacent plains. && .LONG TERM... (Monday night through Saturday) Issued at 148 AM CDT Sun Sep 6 2026 An elongated east/west oriented ridge stretching from the southern plains to the eastern seaboard remains in place through the middle of the week preventing any significant change in temperatures. Models are indicating a trough moving across the upper Midwest erodes the eastern portion of the ridge, reorienting it back to the western United States. The current NBM does not show this change affecting the sensible weather in our CWA for next weekend though it is hard to see how lower heights and reduced subsidence would not be favorable for at least slightly cooler temperatures. Hennig && .AVIATION... (18Z TAFS) Issued at 1137 AM CDT Sun Sep 6 2026 VFR conditions will prevail next 24 hours in light return flow, w/a few high clouds.
