Fire Weather Planning Forecast for Eastern North Carolina
National Weather Service Newport/Morehead City NC
309 PM EDT Sun Aug 23 2026

.DISCUSSION...
It will be a tale of two airmasses over the next few days. Inland
across the coastal plain, a drier airmass and reduced risk of
thunderstorms is expected, especially west of HWY 17. Meanwhile,
east of HWY 17 is likely to see higher relative humidities and a
modestly higher chance of thunderstorms. Winds are expected to be
light despite a front moving into the area, but will be gusty and
erratic near thunderstorms. The strongest thunderstorms could
produce wind gusts of 40-60 mph.
