Fire Weather Planning Forecast for Wrn Montana and N Cntrl Idaho
National Weather Service Missoula MT
218 AM MDT Tue Sep 2 2025

.DISCUSSION...

Idaho (Zones 102 and 103): The dominant ridge of high pressure will
maintain hot and dry conditions through mid-week. The primary concerns
are extreme afternoon heat, poor overnight RH recoveries in thermal
belts, and persistent northeasterly winds. The strong ridge will
suppress convection but a virga shower is possible today. Widespread
smoke from regional fires will continue, with the potential for thicker
smoke to be transported into the area from Canada by Friday. The ridge
will begin to weaken by the weekend, allowing for a return of widespread
showers and thunderstorms.

Northwest MT (Zones 104 and 105): A strong ridge of high pressure will
ensure hot and dry conditions persist through mid-week. The primary
concerns will be poor overnight RH recoveries in thermal belts and
increasingly persistent easterly winds. The chance for any thunderstorm
activity is negligible through at least Thursday. Strengthening easterly
winds on Thursday and Friday will likely transport smoke from Canadian
fires into the region. Widespread showers and thunderstorms are possible
over the weekend as the ridge breaks down.

West Central MT (Zones 106, 107 and 108): Hot and dry conditions under
a strong ridge of high pressure will continue through the workweek. The
chance for any convection is negligible through the end of the week. The
primary concerns will be poor overnight RH recoveries in the thermal
belts, and persistent easterly winds. Increasing easterly winds
strengthen on Thursday and Friday and may bring in additional smoke from
Canada. A pattern shift over the weekend will bring a chance for
widespread showers and thunderstorms.

Southwest MT (Zones 109, 110 and 111): Hot and dry conditions will
persist through mid-week as high pressure remains in control. The threat
for convection is negligible. The main concerns will be poor overnight
RH recoveries in the thermal belts and persistent northeasterly winds.
Regional smoke will continue to cause hazy conditions, with the
potential for thicker smoke to arrive on northeasterly winds late in the
week. The ridge is forecast to weaken by the weekend, allowing
widespread showers and thunderstorms to return to the region.
