Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Pocatello ID
1020 PM MDT Thu Oct 1 2026

.KEY MESSAGES...

- Prolonged Quiet Weather Period: High pressure and dry air will
keep eastern Idaho completely dry with minimal cloud cover
through the workweek, upcoming weekend, and into early
  October.

- Unseasonable Late-Week Warmth: An amplifying Great Basin ridge
will boost lower-elevation temperatures into the upper 70s and
lower 80s starting today and continuing through the weekend.

- No Fall-Like Weather in Sight: High confidence exists for
  above-normal temperatures and suppressed precipitation
extending through the first full week of October.

.DISCUSSION...
Issued at 1240 PM MDT Thu Oct 1 2026

The upcoming forecast remains so stable, that one could really
just say "see previous discussion" and call it a day. Forecast
changes are so minor as to be non-existent. High pressure
stays in place for much of the upcoming week, keeping warm and
dry conditions across East Idaho. Temperatures look to be
warmest on Sunday, and may approach record highs in some
locations. Ensemble means still try to swing a weak shortwave to
the north Monday into Tuesday, but forecast remains dry
overall.

.AVIATION /00Z TAFS THROUGH 00Z SATURDAY/...
Issued at 527 PM MDT Thu Oct 1 2026

Expect VFR conditions through the period (and the foreseeable
future) with high pressure over our area. For tonight into
tomorrow, expect a few high clouds, mainly over our northern
areas, moving through the high pressure ridge. Expect afternoon
gusts of around 15 to 20kts for most TAF sites with the
exception of BYI.

.FIRE WEATHER...
Issued at 1240 PM MDT Thu Oct 1 2026

Dry weather is likely through the weekend and into much of next week
as high pressure will remain in control across eastern Idaho. A few
gusts to 15 to 20 mph are possible the next few afternoons, mainly
across lower elevations. Winds become even lighter over the
weekend as high pressure amplifies over the area keeping things
dry and temperatures on the warmer side of normal into next
week.
