Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Pago Pago AS
151 PM SST Tue Jun 17 2025

.Short term...

Satellite imagery throughout the morning and early afternoon hours
has shown plenty of clouds over the American Samoa islands with
scattered showers, but the trough continues to weaken over the
region. A ridge of high pressure from the southwest is to slowly
push the trough to the north and a change of the weather pattern
is to occur over the territory for the rest of the week.

As the ridge moves over the region, this is forecast to bring
increasing southeasterly winds up to around 25 mph at times
through Friday evening. We continue to have numerous showers (70%
chance) in the forecast for Wednesday, but in the form of passing
tradewinds showers. An inversion is to occur over the islands on
Thursday and Friday to reduce the risk of passing showersto
scattered (40% chance). Overall, rain is not forecast to be strong
enough to cause flash flooding but seasonable east/southeasterly
winds reaching up to 25 mph is to occur at this time. Temperatures
are also expected to be below normal.

.Long term...

The aforementioned ridge is forecast to move further away from the
region by Friday night. This will allow a trough to the north to
move over the territory on Friday night and Saturday. Easterly
winds remain around 10 to 15 mph, but become northeasterly by
Monday as a low pressure is anticipated to form near the Fiji
region by early next week. Severe weather is not anticipated this
weekend.

.Marine...

Ideal conditions remained over the American Samoa coastal waters
throughout the morning and early afternoon hours. However, there
is high confidence that conditions are expected to change for
Wednesday through Saturday. Wind driven waves build as a
southeasterly breeze increases to a fresh to strong breeze by
Wednesday evening. Winds are to become more easterly on Friday and
Friday night, but the fresh to strong breeze continues. Therefore,
expect Small Craft Advisory levels from mid-week through at least
the beginning of the weekend. A southerly swell is to mix with the
rough seas to reach High Surf Advisory conditions by Wednesday and
may reach warning levels late in the week.
