Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Pago Pago AS
142 PM SST Mon Jun 16 2025

.Short term [TONIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY]...
A weak trough will linger over the Islands through midweek,
maintaining light winds and instability. Latest satellite data
shows a line of convection extending across the region, however,
over the Samoa Islands most of it is focused south. Although the
trough appears to be weak, diurnal heating could enhance showers
over land in the afternoon. Expect this pattern to hold through
Tuesday with scattered showers in the morning becoming numerous in
the afternoon. By Tuesday night, a high pressure system building
near New Zealand will begin to shift the trough northward as it
moves east. Expect a diminishing trend for showers to follow.

.Long term [WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY]...
As the high strengthens through the rest of the forecast period,
southeast trades will intensify, bringing winds to near-advisory
thresholds (>25 mph) along with showers embedded within the trade
wind flow. Winds will shift east by Thursday afternoon as the high
continues to tracks east. However, an uptick in showers is
possible for the weekend as the aforementioned trough moves over
the Islands once again.

.Marine...
Current wave heights at the Aunu`u PacIOOS buoy are around 4 to 6
feet as winds have diminished to light conditions. Expect calm
seas to persist through Tuesday, before building Tuesday night as
the high pressure system strengthens.

Meanwhile, signals of a south swell is evident on latest buoy
data showing peak periods around 13 seconds. These swells are
expected to pass through the area through the week, so even though
wave heights are low, the risk of strong rip currents remain.
Hazardous ocean conditions are forecast Tuesday night through the
weekend.
