Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Pago Pago AS
210 PM SST Thu Aug 28 2025

.Short term...

Satellite imagery shows a weakening trough to the west of American
Samoa and continuing to move further away as a weak ridge of high
pressure is now over the region. This ridge is contributing to
decreasing clouds and easterly trades around 15 mph. Overall, this
weather pattern isn`t expected to change much through Saturday
evening. Easterly flow is to continue with only isolated to
scattered (20 to 30% chance) passing showers throughout this time.
If showers occur, flash flooding is not expected. The weak
aforementioned high is to move eastward by Sunday to allow a
better risk of passing showers for the second half of the weekend,
but severe weather is not anticipated.

.Long term...

For Labor Day through mid-week, a strong high pressure system from
the southwest will influence the region to enhance easterly
winds reaching up to 25 mph at times. Showers are forecast to be
in the passing form during this time, but more frequent compared
to the current short term forecast. Also, more clouds than sun are
expected throughout the days, but the likelihood severe weather
remains low.

.Marine...

A moderate easterly breeze is maintaining choppy conditions
throughout the American Samoa coastal waters. A PacIOOS buoy to
the east of Aunu`u shows seas around 8 to 9 feet as of this
afternoon with short periods. Since period timing is low and seas
are to slowly decrease, the High Surf Advisory for the eastern
coasts will likely be cancelled by this evening or early Friday.
However, seas are anticipated to only ease to 6 to 8 feet by the
weekend as the moderate easterlies are to keep seas choppy. Expect
seas to build next week as easterlies are forecast to become a
fresh to strong breeze during this time.
