056 FXZS60 NSTU 190113 AFDPPG Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Pago Pago AS 213 PM SST Wed Jun 18 2025 .Short term... Satellite imagery shows consistant rainfall from a trough that was over the American Samoa islands yesterday has moved to the north. However, cloudy skies remained over the territory with brief light showers in some parts of the islands. As a ridge of high pressure moves closer and strengthens tonight and Thursday, this will help push the trough further northward. In the meantime, east/southeasterly trades are forecast to increase to around 25 mph through Friday. An inversion is to develop over the islands on Thursday and Friday. This tends to greatly reduce the risk of rainfall over the territory and promotes clearing skies. Therefore, the risk of rainfall reduces to isolated to scattered (20 to 30% chance) for Thursday and Friday with breezy tradewinds forecast to continue through this time. .Long term... By the weekend, the aforementioned ridge moves away from American Samoa. This will allow a trough to move over the territory throughout the weekend and increase the risk of showers to numerous (60% chance). However, this rainfall is not projected to be heavy enough to cause flash flooding. Winds are to decrease to around 10 to 15 mph and become easterly during the weekend. Winds may shift northeasterly by the beginning of the week. Overall, no severe weather is expected for the next 7 days. Breezy conditions are forecast through Friday night. && .Marine... The southeasterly breeze increase to a fresh breeze throughout the morning and early afternoon hours and may reach a strong breeze at times starting tonight through Friday evening. Long period southerly swell is mixing in with the wind driven waves to create rough seas today and seas are expected to continue building through Saturday evening. Surf may reach the High Surf Warning criteria for Friday. Expect the Small Craft Advisory to remain in effect through at least the weekend. && .PPG WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... A High Surf Advisory is in effect through Sunday. A Small Craft Advisory remains in effect. && $$ LaPlante
