138 FXUS65 KREV 081959 AFDREV Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Reno NV 1259 PM PDT Wed Oct 8 2025 .KEY MESSAGES... * Temperatures warm up through Thursday with mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies. * Winds increase from the southwest each day through Friday. * A storm system arrives by Friday, bringing cooler temperatures and chances for rain and mountain snow through Saturday. && .DISCUSSION... Mid-week warming will hit its peak today with valley highs in the upper 70s and Sierra highs in the low 70s. Afternoon high temperatures will drop slightly through Friday but plummet Saturday, with afternoon highs 10-20 degrees below normal. Overnight lows also drop significantly, with Sunday morning looking to be the coldest morning of the season so far with lows in the 20s across the Sierra and flirting with freezing in W NV. Afternoon wind gusts increase each day through Friday. Gusts today will range from 25-30 mph across much of the area. Thursday, the windiest conditions look to be isolated to southern Mono and Mineral counties with gusts exceeding 35 mph. Isolated stronger gusts will be possible along wind-prone locations, such as Hwy-95 along Walker Lake and US-395 in Mono county. Afternoon wind gusts peak Friday with gusts around 35 mph for much of the area. Ridgetop gusts will range from 50-70 mph each day through Friday. With low relative humidities, there`s the chance for a couple of hours of elevated to critical fire weather conditions in Mono and Mineral counties, as well. The main culprit for these increased wind gusts is the trough that is dropping down along the PacNW coast. Gusts will be strongest ahead of the low pressure system pivoting inland. Once the low makes landfall, though, expect the chances for rain and snow showers to increase. NE CA and the Sierra north of the Tahoe Basin have the best chances (40-60%) for rain, mainly Friday afternoon and into the evening. Showers will linger overnight and become more widespread Saturday, though chances (15-25%) and accumulations will be light. In fact, forecasted accumulations have trended downward since the last model run, with up 0.05-0.15" forecasted in Lassen county through this system. Snow levels will range from 7-7.5 kft Friday into Saturday though accumulations will be little to none. -Giralte && .AVIATION... VFR conditions continue through Thursday with mostly clear skies. The only exception will be KTRK again with patchy FZFG between 09/12-09/16Z. Afternoon wind gusts will increase each day through Friday with gusts up to 25 kts today, 30 kts Thursday, and 35 kts Friday. However, KMMH will see gusts up to 35 kts Thursday.
