Another 0.50" to 1.50" has fallen over the past 6 hours with the highest amounts over the northern Sierra. Radar showing some scattered showers across northern/central CA with the main area of precip heading into the Sierra. Lightning detection reporting multiple lightning strikes over nrn CA along the north coast and inland around Shasta. TPW has the main moisture plume from the Golden Gate to Point Conception still with a core of about 1.50" PW. Expecting showers and thunderstorms to continue into the evening diminishing and pulling northward overnight. Models continue to predict another surge of moisture into the north coast mid Thursday morning sending another round of more moderate to locally heavy precip the rest of Thursday into Friday. The main focus of this secondary surge will be along the north coast with amounts quickly tapering off inland to Shasta and south of Cape Mendocino. QPF for the afternoon update went up about 0.10-0.25" over the north bay/north coast to account for some precip already fallen the past couple of hours and down a similar amount elsewhere. Forecast was a blend of the latest NBM and WPC guidance. Expecting another 1-2.50" along the north coast through Friday morning (2.50-4.50" Smith Basin), 1.50-3.50" Shasta, 0.75-1.50" central/northern Sierra, and about 0.10-0.50" for the greater Bay Area (locally up to an inch or so Big Sur). Freezing levels about 7-9.5 kft north of I-80 and 9-13 kft from I-80 to the southern Sierra this afternoon. Levels will hover around there most of today before rising again into Thursday back up to 8.5- 12 kft north of I-80. Friday once the precip has ended freezing levels will rise more broadly across the region as high pressure returns. QPF graphics are available at www.cnrfc.noaa.gov/qpf.php AS $$
