.KEY MESSAGES...

- Hot and dry weather will persist through this week and into the
  beginning of next week.

- A heat advisory is in effect for the Big Country this afternoon.

&&

.SHORT TERM...
(Today and tonight)
Issued at 202 AM CDT Tue Aug 18 2026

Upper level high pressure will remain anchored over the region
today keeping hot and dry conditions in place. Several locations
in the Big Country hit or exceeded 105 degrees yesterday and with
similar highs expected today have issued a heat advisory for this
afternoon. Expect highs in the Big Country of 104-106 degrees.
Elsewhere, highs will be in the upper 90s to near 104 degrees.
Overnight lows will continue to be mild- in the mid to upper 70s.

&&

.LONG TERM...
(Wednesday through Monday)
Issued at 202 AM CDT Tue Aug 18 2026

Above normal temperatures and mainly dry conditions will continue
through the extended forecast. Wednesday through Friday an upper
level ridge will remain centered across the Four Corners region,
with its influence extending well into Texas. This will result in
above normal temperatures with highs in the upper 90s to near 106.
On Friday a weak cold front is forecast to drop south to near the
Red River. A few showers and thunderstorms are possible in the
vicinity of this boundary and on the eastern periphery of the
ridge. At this point, confidence is low that we will see any
showers or thunderstorms in our northern counties, so have
continued a dry forecast for now. As we head into the weekend, the
upper level ridge will inch closer to Texas. This will result in
a continuation of the hot and dry conditions. Highs will be in the
upper 90s to near 105. Overnight lows will be in the mid to upper
70s.
