647 FXUS64 KSJT 181817 AFDSJT Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Angelo TX 117 PM CDT Tue Aug 18 2026 ...New SHORT TERM, LONG TERM... .KEY MESSAGES... - Hot and dry weather will persist through this week and into the beginning of next week. - A heat advisory is in effect for the Big Country for both this afternoon and again on Wednesday afternoon. && .SHORT TERM... (This evening through Wednesday) Issued at 1259 PM CDT Tue Aug 18 2026 Nothing really changing in the air mass over the next 24 hours, so little change in the expected forecast. Lighter overnight wind speeds and a little drier dewpoints allowed morning lows to drop into the mid and upper 60s across the Concho Valley south into the Hill Country and Edwards Plateau. Model blends forecasting lows well up in the 70s and this just seems to warm given the same lower wind speeds and dewpoints tonight. Trimmed morning lows back a few degrees to better match this mornings lows. Otherwise, tomorrows highs will be very near the same as today. Current Heat Advisory runs through sunset this evening, and with similar conditions for tomorrow, went ahead and issued another Heat Advisory for the same areas for tomorrow afternoon. && .LONG TERM... (Wednesday night through next Tuesday) Issued at 1259 PM CDT Tue Aug 18 2026 Upper level ridge remains the main story across the Southern PLains with no real end in sight. Ridge does shift just far enough west that northerly flow and a weak shortwave are able to drop south into North Texas on Saturday. Earlier model runs were generating a few showers and storms across the area, but this mornings model blends have shrunk those small POPs down even more as the upper level ridge axis holds on a little stronger. Given these summer ridges usually hold on stronger, not going to put POPs back into the forecast at this point but will continue to monitor the situation. Otherwise, hot conditions to continue with very little change in temperatures. && .AVIATION... (18Z TAFS) Issued at 1210 PM CDT Tue Aug 18 2026 VFR conditions and generally clear skies are expected through the next 24 hours. Winds this afternoon will be from the south to southeast, at 9-11 knots with a few higher gusts (to near 18 knots) at times. Light south winds are expected tonight for our southern terminals, and KABI/KSJT will have southeast to south winds near 8 knots. On Wednesday morning, expect south to southwest winds 8-11 knots 14Z-18Z at our TAF sites. && .PRELIMINARY POINT TEMPS/POPS...
