762 FNCA62 TJSJ 140909 RFDSJU PRZ014-015-027-142115- Fire Danger Statement National Weather Service San Juan PR 509 AM AST Sat Jun 14 2025 ...ELEVATED FIRE DANGER IS EXPECTED ACROSS SOUTHERN PUERTO RICO DURING THE LATE MORNING AND AFTERNOON HOURS TODAY... Fire weather conditions remain hazardous across southern Puerto Rico today, as very dry fuels and breezy conditions persist. Fire activity was reported across the southwestern coastal plains on Friday, and similar conditions today may lead to additional rapid spread with any fire ignition across this region. Today, particularly between 1000 AM and 400 PM AST, another period of elevated fire danger is expected. The Keetch-Byram Drought Index (KBDI), which reflects soil and surface fuel dryness, remains critically high, approximately 574 in Cabo Rojo and 611 in Guanica, indicating vegetation is highly flammable. Rainfall deficits over the past 30 to 60 days remain significant, with percent of normal at 25% to 50% of typical amounts for this time of year. Sustained east-southeasterly winds of 15 to 20 mph, with gusts over 25 mph, combined with low relative humidity between 40% and 50%, will continue to support conditions favorable for fire ignition and rapid spread. While slightly higher moisture is expected to move in on Sunday, todays environment remains conducive to fire weather hazards. Fire danger across other areas such as Vieques and Saint Croix remains lower, but occasional fire activity cannot be entirely ruled out. Residents and visitors are strongly advised to avoid outdoor burning and exercise extreme caution with any activity that may start a fire. If you observe smoke or an active fire, report it immediately by calling 9-1-1 or your local fire department. Fire and emergency officials should be aware that weather conditions are becoming more conducive for the ignition and spread of wildfires. Fire danger statements are issued when fire weather conditions are approaching, but not meeting or exceeding, Red Flag Warning criteria. $$
