Fire Danger Statement
National Weather Service San Juan PR
500 AM AST Fri Jun 13 2025

...ELEVATED FIRE DANGER IS EXPECTED ACROSS SOUTHERN PUERTO RICO
DURING THE MORNING AND EARLY AFTERNOON HOURS TODAY...

Fire weather conditions have worsened across southern Puerto Rico
as persistent dry and breezy weather continues, with official
observing stations confirming over 6 hours of elevated fire danger
yesterday. Today, especially between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM AST,
another period of elevated fire danger is expected. The Keetch-
Byram Drought Index (KBDI), which reflects soil and surface fuel
dryness, has risen to approximately 570 in Cabo Rojo and 607 in
Gunica, indicating severe dryness that makes vegetation highly
flammable. Rainfall over the past 30 to 60 days remains well below
normal, at only 25% to 50% of typical amounts. Sustained winds of
15 to 20 mph, with gusts exceeding 25 mph, combined with low
humidity between 45% and 55%, will increase the likelihood that
fires will spread quickly if ignited. While fire risk is lower in
other fire-prone areas such as Vieques and Saint Croix, fire
spread cannot be ruled out there.

Residents and visitors are strongly advised to avoid outdoor
burning and exercise caution with any activities that could start
a fire. If you see smoke or an active fire, please report it
immediately by calling 9-1-1 or your local fire department. These
dry and hazardous conditions are expected to persist through at
least Saturday.

Fire and emergency officials should be aware that weather
conditions are becoming more conducive for the ignition and
spread of wildfires.

Fire danger statements are issued when fire weather conditions
are approaching, but not meeting or exceeding, Red Flag Warning
criteria.
