927 FNCA62 TJSJ 170900 RFDSJU PRZ014-015-027-172100- Fire Danger Statement National Weather Service San Juan PR 500 AM AST Tue Jun 17 2025 ...ELEVATED FIRE DANGER IS EXPECTED ACROSS SOUTHERN PUERTO RICO DURING THE LATE MORNING AND AFTERNOON HOURS TODAY... Fire weather conditions remain hazardous across southern Puerto Rico today, as very dry fuels, increasing winds, and a gradual decrease in moisture contribute to elevated fire danger. While conditions on Monday were less conducive due to slightly higher moisture and lighter winds, today`s environment is more supportive of enhanced fire spread. During the period from 900 AM to 500 PM AST, elevated fire danger is expected. The Keetch-Byram Drought Index (KBDI) continues to increase, with current values around 586 in Cabo Rojo and 622 in Guanica, indicating deep dryness. Rainfall deficits across the region remain significant, with the percentage of normal precipitation ranging from 10% to 50%, contributing to the continued drying of soils and surface fuels. East-southeasterly winds of 15 to 20 mph, with gusts exceeding 25 mph, along with relative humidity values between 40% and 50%, will combine to support conditions favorable for fire spread, particularly across wind-prone areas of the southern coastal plains and adjacent hills. Although nearby areas such as Vieques and Saint Croix currently face lower fire danger, occasional fire spread remains possible under locally favorable conditions. Residents and visitors are strongly advised to avoid outdoor burning and exercise extreme caution with any activity that may start a fire. If you observe smoke or an active fire, report it immediately by calling 9-1-1 or your local fire department. Fire and emergency officials should be aware that weather conditions are becoming more conducive for the ignition and spread of wildfires. Fire danger statements are issued when fire weather conditions are approaching, but not meeting or exceeding, Red Flag Warning criteria. $$
