...ELEVATED FIRE DANGER EXPECTED ACROSS ALL OF PUERTO RICO...
VIEQUES...CULEBRA...AND THE U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS TODAY...

A very dry and increasingly windy air mass will spread across the
local islands today, with little to no wetting rainfall expected.
Easterly winds of 15 to 20 mph with gusts around 30 mph will combine
with widespread vegetation and crop stress, ongoing rainfall
deficits, and increasingly dry fuels. The greatest fuel stress
remains across southern and southwestern Puerto Rico, where recent
fire activity has also been more frequent, but elevated fire weather
conditions are expected across Puerto Rico, Vieques, Culebra, and
the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Elevated fire danger is expected today, with conditions likely to
continue or worsen Friday and Saturday as the very dry air mass
persists, winds remain strong, and fuels continue to dry. Any fires
that develop may ignite more easily and spread rapidly.

Residents and visitors should avoid outdoor burning and use caution
with activities that could generate sparks or open flames,
especially where vegetation is dry or stressed.

Fire and emergency management officials should be prepared for an
increased potential for wildfire ignition and rapid fire spread.

Fire Danger Statements are issued when fire weather conditions are
approaching, but not meeting or exceeding, Red Flag Warning
criteria.
