Fire Danger Statement
National Weather Service San Juan PR
544 AM AST Wed Jun 18 2025

...ELEVATED FIRE WEATHER CONDITIONS EXPECTED ACROSS THE SOUTHERN
COASTAL PLAINS OF PUERTO RICO DURING THE LATE MORNING AND
AFTERNOON HOURS TODAY...

Persistent breezy to locally windy conditions will continue across
the region, with expected winds between 15- 20 mph, and gusts up
to 25 - 27 mph. The southern coastal plains of Puerto Rico remain
as the biggest concern, as the vegetation health keeps
deteriorating with very low soil saturations and dry fuels.
Additionally, the precipitation deficit continues along this zone,
with percent of normals in the last 30 days below 25% and between
75 and 50 % in the lasts 60 days. Stations over these areas
(Guanica and Cabo Rojo) continue reporting KDBI values above
thresholds (625 and 590 respectively) presenting dry conditions
since late May and the beginning of June. Given these conditions,
and relative humidities dropping below thresholds (around 47 %)
today, conditions should be favorable for fire spreading along
the Southern Coastal Plains of Puerto Rico.

Residents and visitors are strongly advised to avoid outdoor burning
and exercise extreme caution with any activity that may start a
fire. If you observe smoke or an active fire, report it immediately
by calling 9-1-1 or your local fire department.

Fire and emergency officials should be aware that weather
conditions are becoming more conducive for the ignition and
spread of wildfires.

Fire danger statements are issued when fire weather conditions
are approaching, but not meeting or exceeding, Red Flag Warning
criteria.
