.KEY MESSAGES...

 - Widespread rain and snow showers this evening through Friday
   morning.

 - Drier weather returns this weekend into early next week.

.DISCUSSION...

...This Afternoon - Friday...

Clouds continue to move through the area this afternoon and are
associated with an approaching system over the eastern Pacific.
Moisture influx from the Pacific and the deepening trough will
bring rain and snow showers the area this evening through Friday
morning. Snow levels will be above 6500 feet and drop to above
5500 feet later on Thursday when cooler air filters in. Snow
totals by Friday morning are forecasted to be 3 to 7 inches at
the highest peaks south of Hwy 50 in the Sierra. Forecasted rain
totals by Friday morning are up to an inch in the mountains and up
to a half an inch in the valley. Lowest totals near the Valley
and towards the Delta. Temperatures are expected to be cooler
Thursday and Friday, with highs reaching the 50s and lows in the
40s within the valley. Areas in the mountains drop to the 20s for
morning lows.

...Saturday and Onward...

After Friday, conditions dry out across the region as weak
ridging builds into western CONUS. Temperatures will be in the 60s
within the valley and the 50s in the mountains for daytime highs.
Mostly sunny skies and lighter winds are expected through the
weekend and into early next week. There is a slight chance for a
rain shower or snow shower early next week within the Sierra
(south of Highway 50), but probabilities are less than 10 percent
at this time. This is associated with a weak upper level wave
moving through parts of the southwestern United States that clips
part of the area. Clusters have started to hint at the ridge
breaking down mid to late next week with the introduction of a low
pressure system off of the CA coast. Confidence remains low on
timing, impacts, and development of the low pressure system at
this time.

the Sacramento Metro. Areas in SCK and MOD see rain around 10-14z.
