Hydrologic Outlook
National Weather Service Great Falls MT
303 AM MST Sun Dec 14 2025

...Mild daytime and overnight temperatures will lead to rapid
melting of recent snow...

Daytime temperatures in the 40s to low 50s and overnight
temperatures remaining above freezing will lead to a fairly quick
melting of the recent snow across the north-central Montana plains.
Soils beneath the snow will initially remain frozen and melting snow
may result in standing water in areas of poor drainage and create
difficult access to fields and impact some rural roads, particularly
where a heavier snow pack exists across eastern portions of
north-central Montana.

In addition, runoff from recent snowmelt at higher elevations near
the continental divide and new snowmelt across the plains may flow
into still iced over creeks at lower elevations causing additional
issues as water flows over the ice or causes an ice break-up or jam,
primarily on smaller creeks.

The unpredictable nature of snowmelt and ice on smaller creeks and
streams is a situation to be monitored. Additionally, a period of
muddy and wet ground conditions may create difficult access in some
rural areas. Please report any flooding to local law enforcement
and have them relay the report
to the National Weather Service.
