.SYNOPSIS...Temperatures will peak on Sunday, when an Extreme Heat
Warning is in effect for lower elevations of southeastern
California, southern Nevada, and northwestern Arizona. Expect breezy-
to-gusty southwesterly winds each afternoon through the forecast
period, with strongest speeds expected on Monday. Temperatures will
cool off slightly through the start of the work week, but will peak
once again midweek.

.DISCUSSION...High pressure will build over the Desert Southwest
through the weekend with temperatures peaking on Sunday at 8 to 12
degrees above seasonal normals. "Major" HeatRisk will occur over
portions of the region, with widespread "Moderate" elsewhere.
Extreme Heat Warning is in effect on Sunday (Father`s Day) for
valley locations of southeastern California, southern Nevada, and
northwestern Arizona. This warning includes Death Valley National
Park, western San Bernardino County, far southern Nye County, lower
elevations of Clark County including Las Vegas, southern Mohave
County, and the Colorado River Valley including the Lake Mead
National Recreation Area. If planning to spend time outdoors this
weekend, avoid the hottest parts of the day, bring plenty of water,
and wear sunscreen.

Meanwhile, a dry southwesterly flow aloft continues as the region
remains sandwiched between a trough over the eastern Pacific and the
aforementioned ridge of high pressure. This will keep daily
afternoon breezes in the forecast through Sunday.

On Monday, the eastern Pacific trough will begin to move east as the
ridge becomes suppressed to the south. This will allow for southwest
winds to increase even more with widespread breezy to windy
conditions over much of the area. The strongest winds will remain
over the western Mojave Desert where the probability of wind gusts
over 40 mph stands around 50-70 percent. Will continue to monitor to
see if wind headlines become necessary, but for now it appears that
the strongest winds will remain over high terrain. The other main
concern will be increasing fire weather danger with gusty southwest
winds combined with very dry conditions will lead to near-critical
to critical fire weather conditions. See the fire weather section

High pressure will begin to rebuild Wednesday and Thursday with
temperatures once again rising a few degrees, but another trough
moving into the Pacific Northwest late next week could bring another
round of gusty southwest winds along with cooler temperatures.

.AVIATION...For Harry Reid...For the 00Z Forecast Package...The
primary aviation concern continues to be gusty winds. South to
southwest winds with gusts 20-25 kts will occur into this evening
before diminishing to around 10 kts. Gusty southwest winds will
return Sunday with gusts to around 20 kts in the afternoon. VFR
conditions otherwise prevail, with passing high clouds around 25kft.
Temperatures today will be 100 degrees or greater through 04Z. High
temperatures Sunday will exceed 100 degrees from 19z-04z with highs
around 109 degrees.

For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast
California...For the 00Z Forecast Package...Across the region, gusty
south to southwest winds around 20 kts will prevail into this
evening with winds diminishing overnight, generally less than 10
kts. Gusty southwest winds are expected again Sunday with most areas
gusting to around 20-25 kts in the afternoon. VFR conditions prevail
areawide, with rounds of high clouds with bases around 25kft.

.FIRE WEATHER...Increasing southwest winds combined with very dry
conditions will lead to near-critical to critical fire weather
concerns Monday. Minimum RH 3-8 percent combined with southwest
winds 15-25 mph with gusts 30-35 mph are expected. Overnight RH
recoveries are expected to be between 10-15 percent. In addition,
fuels across the region are approaching critical. A Fire Weather
Watch has been issued from 19z to 03z Monday for Fire Zones 101,
102, 462, 464, 465, and 466.
