300 FXUS65 KVEF 031752 AFDVEF Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Las Vegas NV 1052 AM PDT Sun Aug 3 2025 .KEY MESSAGES... * Mostly dry conditions and slightly-above normal temperatures continue through the weekend and into the start of next week. * Temperatures increase to well-above normal mid-to-late week, with Moderate to Major Heat Risk in desert valleys. Extreme Heat Watch in effect for southern zones Wednesday and Thursday. && .DISCUSSION...Today through Sunday. Conditions remain largely dry across the forecast area, with the persistent dry southwesterly flow aloft, thanks to troughing in the Pacific Northwest and ridging across the southern CONUS / northern Mexico. Expect sunny skies, temperatures slightly-above normal, and afternoon south-southwesterly breezes through the remainder of the weekend. Monday and Tuesday, an incoming trough will deamplify the southern CONUS ridge, which will help moderate temperatures into early next week. This trough may shift the ridge far enough east to encourage a modest monsoonal moisture flow up the Colorado River Valley Tuesday and Wednesday. Forecast ECMWF ensemble PWATs have diminished slightly, but continue to show 0.50 to 0.75" of PWAT from Laughlin / Bullhead City to Las Vegas. NBM PoPs remain very slight (5 - 15%) and isolated to far eastern Mohave County Wednesday through Friday. Mid-to-late week, the southern CONUS ridge of high pressure builds westward across the Desert Southwest. This will result in rising heights over our forecast area and temperatures increasing to 6 to 8 degrees above seasonal normals. "Moderate" (Level 2 on a scale 0 to 4) HeatRisk becomes widespread on Wednesday across southeastern California, southern Nevada, and northwestern Arizona, with "Major" (Level 3 on a scale 0 to 4) HeatRisk along the Colorado River Valley and southern Mohave County. Major HeatRisk spreads further north on Thursday, with pockets of "Extreme" (Level 4 on a scale 0 to 4). As a result, Extreme Heat Watches are in effect for southern Mohave County and southern San Bernardino County as well as the Colorado River Valley for Wednesday and Thursday. Troughing in the Pacific Northwest and Intermountain West will help to deamplify the ridge over the Desert Southwest heading into next weekend, which will moderate temperatures closer to seasonal normals. && .AVIATION...For Harry Reid...For the 18Z Forecast Package...Winds will shift to the southwest early this afternoon, persisting thereafter. Gusts to 15-20KT are expected this afternoon through mid evening, with a brief lull expected before gusts to 20-25KT return overnight. While there is uncertainty in the persistence of gusts, expect 20-25KT gusts to continue at least intermittently thereafter through the end of the period. VFR conditions prevail with increasing high clouds and lofted smoke from wildfires that is not expected to produce any surface visibility reductions. Temperatures will exceed 100F between 20Z-04Z, peaking at 107F. For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast California...For the 18Z Forecast Package...Gusty southerly to southwesterly winds will develop this afternoon through early evening, with gusts to 15-25KT expected. Winds diminish after sunset, through at Las Vegas Valley terminals, gusts return after 06Z. Exceptions are across the Owens Valley, where gusty winds will vary between the west and north, diminishing overnight, and the western Mojave where gusty west winds will continue. VFR conditions will prevail, with ceilings at KDAG improving as lofted smoke mixes out, and increasing high clouds expected through the period with hazy skies and smoke not expected to produce any surface visibility reductions. && .SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT...Spotters are encouraged to report any significant weather or impacts according to standard operating procedures. && $$ DISCUSSION...Soulat AVIATION...Phillipson For more forecast information...see us on our webpage: https://weather.gov/lasvegas or follow us on Facebook and Twitter
