Denver/Boulder Aviation Discussion

.AVIATION...(For the 00Z TAFS through 00Z Tuesday evening)
Issued at 850 PM MDT Mon Apr 23 2018
A thunderstorm moved over KDEN in the past hour and then
dissipated while the cold front is presently moving over the
airfield. North winds should continue overnight as rain showers
re-develop and then change to light snow in the early morning.
Gusty winds should continue for a few more hours and then begin to
decrease. Ceilings may come down to IFR condition during the
heaviest precipitation, which is expected in the pre-dawn hours.
The moist airmass is expected to remain in place on Tuesday which
will keep ceilings below 2000 feet through late morning. VFR
ceilings are expected in the afternoon.

.AVIATION...(For the 00Z TAFS through 00Z Tuesday evening)
Issued at 257 PM MDT Mon Apr 23 2018
Limited moisture and instability ahead of an approaching weather
system will bring a few showers and thunderstorms to the area this
evening. This will primarily impact areas in and near the mountains
and out along the Palmer Divide.
Tonight through Tuesday morning, a disturbance will advance
southward across the region sending a strong cold front south
through the plains later this evening and through the overnight
hours. Shower activity will increase over northern parts of the
flight area with snow levels lowering to around 6,000 feet by
Tuesday morning. The cold front will bring a burst of strong
northerly winds south through the plains overnight into Tuesday
with gusts over 40 mph possible.
The KCOS terminal may see instability showers or storms develop in
the vicinity until about 02z. Then, after about 05z and continuing
through 18z Tuesday, KCOS will see possible rain/snow showers in the
vicinity and strong northerly winds as the cold front moves through.
KPUB will probably stay dry through 18z with precipitation
possibly developing thereafter. However, KPUB will see the cold
front move through around 06z accompanied by strong northerly
winds.
KALS will probably not see too much impact from the incoming
weather system through 18z Tuesday. Conditions there should
remain VFR with relatively light winds through the period.

.AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Tuesday night)
Issued at 1106 PM MDT Mon Apr 23 2018
East of the Divide...KCOD/KCPR/KLND/KRIW/KWRL Routes
MVFR Ceilings are likely with isolated snow showers or occasional
snow flurries across the Lander Foothills, and much of Johnson and
Natrona counties this morning. MVFR ceilings in the Cody
Foothills are expected to improve to VFR by 12Z.
By around 18Z...VFR conditions are expected at all terminals with
skies becoming mainly SKC by sunset. Not out of the question for a
few snow showers coming off the Bighorn Mountains in the
afternoon. Breezy northerly winds are expected to weaken by
sunrise, but remain light northerly through the day Tuesday. Winds
are then expected to light and variable Tuesday night.
West of the Divide...KBPI/KJAC/KPNA/KRKS Routes
Areas with MVFR ceilings are expected to develop across the Upper
Green River Basin, as well as Sweetwater County late tonight with
most confidence at the KRKS terminal. There could also be some
snow showers across the Upper Green River Basin. Far western
valleys have a chance for low clouds and/or fog Tuesday morning,
but confidence is not high enough to include those conditions at
KJAC terminal. Either way, ceilings are expected to lift to VFR or
scatter out between 16Z and 19Z. Skies are then expected to
become mainly SKC by early evening. Breezy easterly winds will
occur today across Sweetwater County.

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Tuesday afternoon)
Issued at 1012 AM MDT Mon Apr 23 2018
Introduced thunderstorms into the 18Z TAFs this afternoon. Latest
HRRR guidance showing earlier than expected development this
afternoon, so moved up timing as well. Possibility of seeing KCYS
going IFR as winds turn northeasterly shortly after 00Z. WIll
continue to monitor unfolding events.

.AVIATION...(For the 00Z TAFS through 00Z Tuesday evening)
Issued at 513 PM MDT Mon Apr 23 2018
VFR to MVFR conditions are forecast for the TAFs. Southeast winds
will be light ahead of the front. Behind the front north winds
will be light to breezy, with the wind speeds increasing after
12z. The best chance for rainfall will be from 8-16z, although the
rainfall may exit sooner than that. As the front moves through,
MVFR cloud deck will accompany it. The cloud deck will slowly
raise through the morning, with VFR cloud deck during the
afternoon. IFR cloud deck may occur around 12z for a few hours as
the front moves through. Will wait until the next TAF issuance to
place a mention in if one is needed.

.AVIATION...(For the 00Z TAFS through 00Z Tuesday evening)
Issued at 604 PM CDT Mon Apr 23 2018
VFR conditions will prevail at all TAF sites through early Tuesday
morning. Low level stratus is then expected to develop along and
behind a cold front as it pushes southeast across western Kansas by
early afternoon, in turn resulting in likely MVFR cigs in the
vicinity of all TAF sites through the remainder of the period. Brief
periods of IFR cigs cannot be ruled out Tuesday afternoon at KHYS,
KGCK, or KDDC. Showers and isolated thunderstorms will be associated
with the frontal boundary increasing the potential for periods of
MVFR vsbys as well. Southeast winds 5 to 15kt will persist through
early Tuesday morning as a weak lee side trough of low pressure
remains anchored across eastern Colorado while surface high
pressure prevails in the Upper Midwest. Gusty north-northwest
winds 15 to 30kt will develop mid/late morning into the afternoon
period as the aforementioned cold front pushes through western
Kansas.

AVIATION...
For the 00z TAFs...
VFR conditions expected for the most part for the next 24 hours.
Have some concern that MVFR ceilings may develop Tuesday at
northern terminals.
For tonight, light rain showers may move into the DHT vicinity for
the first couple hours of the forecast. Otherwise, mid- and
high-level clouds expected at all terminals overnight with
southeast surface winds around 15 kt.
Cold front expected to shift surface winds to north at all
terminals as it passes.
Frontal passage expected around 12z Tuesday at DHT, where gusts
around 35 kt will develop around 14z. Stratocumulus layer around
2500 feet may thicken enough to create an MVFR ceiling.
For GUY, surface winds expected to become easterly around 12z
prior to frontal passage, with passage around 17z. Post-frontal
surface gusts to around 30 kt expected with stratocumulus layer
around 3500 feet, with a chance of light rain showers and MVFR
ceilings after 18z.
At AMA, frontal passage expected around 17z, with surface winds in
the 15 to 20 kt range, and mid-level overcast layer Tuesday
afternoon well into the VFR range.

00Z TAF CYCLE
VFR conditions will prevail for the next 24 hours. A few breezes this
afternoon will diminish with sunset. Areas of virga across western
and central NM may produce gusty and erratic winds through
approximately 02Z. Showers and isolated thunderstorms across
northeast NM are already diminishing, but could see a few more cells
develop through 06Z. These storms will also be capable of gusty and
erratic winds. The The leading edge of a strong back door front is
expected to enter far northeastern NM by 10Z-12Z Tuesday, reaching
KTCC around 15Z, and KROW by 21Z. Winds will rapidly become
north and northeast behind the front with gusts between 30 and 35kt
likely. Later Tuesday evening and overnight, MVFR to IFR cigs will be
possible across eastern NM.
