102 SXUS73 KARX 081648 RERLSE RECORD EVENT REPORT NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE LA CROSSE WI 1147 AM CDT SUN SEP 8 2024 ...FINALLY A DAILY COLD RECORD AT LA CROSSE, WI... ON SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, THE LOW TEMPERATURE AT LA CROSSE REGIONAL AIRPORT FELL TO 40F. THIS TIED THE RECORD LOW FOR THE DATE SET BACK IN 1956 AND 1986. THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME THAT EITHER A DAILY COLD HIGH OR RECORD LOW HAS BEEN SET OR TIED IN LA CROSSE SINCE FEBRUARY 15, 2021. THIS 1,300-DAY STRETCH IS THE LONGEST STRETCH OF DAYS BETWEEN SIMILAR (DAILY COLD-TO-COLD OR WARM-TO-WARM RECORDS) DAILY TEMPERATURE RECORDS. THE PREVIOUS RECORD WAS AN 818-DAY STRETCH FROM JULY 7 THROUGH OCTOBER 3, 1999. LIKE THIS LATEST STRETCH, IT WAS ALSO A STRETCH OF DAYS WITHOUT A DAILY COLD RECORD. IF LOOK AT THE 10 LONGEST OF THESE STRETCHES, 9 OF THE THEM WERE STRETCHES OF DAYS BETWEEN DAILY COLD-TO-COLD RECORDS AND JUST 1 OF THEM WAS A STRETCH OF DAYS BETWEEN DAILY WARM-TO-WARM RECORDS (A 524- DAY STRETCH FROM MAY 1, 1992 TO OCTOBER 7, 1993). THROUGHOUT THE LA CROSSE CLIMATE DATABASE, THERE HAS BEEN A GRADUAL INCREASE IN THE NUMBER OF DAYS BETWEEN DAILY TEMPERATURE RECORDS. THIS IS TO BE EXPECTED, BECAUSE AS RECORD DATABASES LENGTHEN, THE DAILY RECORDS BECOME INCREASING MORE DIFFICULT TO BREAK, SO THE AVERAGE DATES BETWEEN THEM GRADUALLY LENGTHENS. ONE THING INTERESTING SINCE THE 1970S IS THAT THERE HAS BEEN A DRAMATIC INCREASE IN THE NUMBER OF DAYS BETWEEN DAILY COLD-TO-COLD RECORDS. THIS IS BECAUSE THE FREQUENCY OF COLD RECORDS HAVE BEEN DECREASING. THIS IS NOT HAPPENING WITH EITHER THE WARM-TO-WARM RECORDS OR BETWEEN ANY DAILY TEMPERATURE RECORDS. $$ BOYNE
