Alert Administrative Message
National Weather Service Southern Region Headquarters
223 PM CDT Thu May 24 2018

TO: All Southern Region Offices

FROM: Southern Region Headquarters

SUBJECT: Critical Weather Days Declared

NCEP has declared a critical weather day for Southern Region from
15Z Friday May 25th through 12Z Tuesday May 29th due to possible
tropical development over the Gulf of Mexico and the chance for
flooding across the Southeast.

Critical weather days are designed to maintain the stability
of our NWS internet services, and to reduce the latency of
products/services to our partners and the public. Please help
us achieve this goal by adhering to the following rules:

  1) No installation of local system patches or other changes.

  2) No streaming of audio or other continuous feed products,
unless this is the only means by which your office can
obtain critical weather-related information during hazardous
     weather events.

  3) No other excessively large file uploads or other bandwidth-
intensive use of the internet beyond what is operationally

  4) No AWIPS upgrades for offices within the impact area.

REMEMBER: Our individual internet use can, and often does,
collectively impact our entire region`s network resources.
Please be mindful of our mission, and show restraint during
this period of active weather, even if you are not in the
impacted area. This will ensure that our critical services
reach our customers unimpeded when they need them most.

Thank you for your assistance and support.
