516 FXUS62 KKEY 061430 AFDKEY Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Key West FL 1030 AM EDT Mon May 6 2024 ...New DISCUSSION, MARINE, AVIATION... .DISCUSSION... Issued at 1030 AM EDT Mon May 6 2024 The Florida Keys remain in a region of weak, broad, mid-level ridging extending from the Yucatan Peninsula to the Mid-Atlantic. Meanwhile a strong, negatively tilted trough east of the Rockies continues to progress eastward, and will likely produce a severe weather outbreak across the Plains today. The 12z morning sounding at KEY sampled a much shallower well- mixed layer than was observed 24 hours ago. Now, there is evidence of a relatively stable layer just above at 950-850 mb. It should thus not be very surprising that KBYX Doppler Radar is detecting less in the way of shallow shower activity across the Florida Keys marine zones today than yesterday. GOES-16 visible satellite is highlighting partly cloudy skies, allowing temperatures to creep into the lower to mid 80s across the island chain. Outside of a possible brief, isolated shower at a few communities, a dry forecast is still anticipated today. No adjustments were made to the short- term products. && .MARINE... Issued at 1030 AM EDT Mon May 6 2024 Small Craft Should Exercise Caution headlines posted for the Straits of Florida today. Additional marine headlines may be required overnight for some marine zones. High pressure over the western North Atlantic will maintain moderate to occasionally fresh east to southeast breezes through midweek. Breezes will turn to the southeast and south and relax later in the week, as the high shifts southward and weakens over the western Atlantic. && .AVIATION... (15Z TAFS) Issued at 1030 AM EDT Mon May 6 2024 VFR conditions will continue through the TAF period with sky coverage fluctuating between FEW and SCT AOA 2k ft. Easterly near- surface winds of 10 to 15 kts will occaisional gust to near 20 kts, but the timing is virtually unpredictable due to the short and sporadic nature of these afternoon gusts. Chances for any shower activity remain low at 10 percent for both terminals. && .CLIMATE... Today`s sunset will be at 759 PM in Key West. Starting tomorrow, May 7th, sunset will be at 800 PM. The sunset will be 800 PM or later in Key West until August 17th. && .KEY WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... FL...None.
