HYDROLOGIC STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE BLACKSBURG VA
339 AM EDT Fri May 22 2020

...SPECIAL RIVER STATEMENT...

Excessive rainfall has fallen across the region over the past three
days. The entire region has had at least 2-3 inches of rain during
this time frame, with many locations in the New River Valley, Roanoke
Valley, Southside Virginia, and north central North Carolina receiving
in excess of five inches of rainfall during the past three days.

As of result of the excessive rainfall, numerous rivers are in flood,
with several rivers in moderate to major flood, including the New,
Roanoke, and Dan Rivers. River flood warnings and statements for
most of the major rivers are covered in River Flood Warning (FLW) and
River Flood Statements (FLS) which are updated continually throughout
this flood event as observed rainfall amounts are processed and
river forecasts are updated. However, there are a number of other
creeks, streams, and rivers which do not have specific forecast points,
but are in flood. The purpose of this statement is to highlight some
of the other creeks, streams, and rivers that are known to be in flood,
and in some cases major to moderate flood.

Here is a list of other river points that we monitor that are currently
in flood which are not covered in specific River Flood Warnings/Statements.

New River at Ivanhoe: Minor Flood
Reed Creek at Grahmas Forge: Minor Flood
Peak Creek in Pulaski County: Minor Flood

Note, many other creeks and streams, including many unnamed creeks and streams are above bankful and thus near flood. Many of these creeks, streams, and rivers will remain in flood for the next couple of days. Extreme caution
should be exercised near any creek, stream, or river until water levels
subside over the weekend.
