.SYNOPSIS...Big weather changes are on the way for much of the
state beginning Friday with light shower activity across portions
of northern and northwestern Nevada although temperatures will
still be quite mild. A strong cold front along with a broad low
pressure trough will move through the region Saturday bringing a
mix of rain and snow to the area along with much cooler
temperatures. Impacts from snow will be minimal and most likely
occur in the early morning hours of Sunday. Chances of light snow
showers with minimal valley impacts continue through Wednesday
with a potentially stronger weather disturbance moving in sometime
on Thursday.

.SHORT TERM...Tonight through Friday night

Increasing cloud cover and Pacific moisture within increasing
southwest flow aloft ahead a robust Pacific trough will bring a
few light rain and mountain snow showers to northern and
northwestern Nevada Friday. Surface winds from the south-southwest
will be breezy with gusts approaching 30-35 mph across central
and northwestern Nevada. Lows tonight will be elevated compared to
the previous few nights with primarily 30s in valley areas. High
temperatures Friday will still be quite warm in the 60s,
approaching The strong cold front will begin moving through
Humboldt county late Friday night but robust forward motion will
hold off until Saturday morning before barreling through the state
Saturday morning through Saturday evening. Lows Friday

.LONG TERM...Saturday through next Wednesday

A more active weather pattern will be developing through the
weekend into next mid-week. An upper level trough and attendant
strong cold front will push across northern and central Nevada
throughout Saturday. Much cooler temperatures will be felt across
the region as readings will be in the 40s and 50s. In addition,
the wind direction will shift after the frontal passage to the
west and northwest with gusts to 30 to 40 mph. Snow levels will
initially start high at or above 6500 feet in the morning but will
lower to about 5000 to 5500 feet by the late afternoon and
evening. Snow amounts for the day continue to be on the light side
with less than a half inch in the valleys and about an inch or so
on the higher terrain. Winds will diminish during the evening
hours with isolated to scattered snow showers continuing during
the overnight with lows in the 20s and 30s. Winds will diminish
during the night.

The main upper trough is expected to move through Sunday and
Monday with a northwest flow aloft. This will help to keep a lid
on temperatures with below normal readings in the 40s and 50s
during both afternoons. Breezy west to northwest winds are
expected with wind gusts of 35 mph. On both days, snow amounts
will continue to remain light with up to a half-inch in the
valleys and an inch or so on the higher terrain. Some locations in
northern Elko county could see one to three inches. Unsettled
weather and clouds will remain during the overnight though
accumulations will be light. Lows for the overnight periods will
be in the 20s and 30s.

The weather will remain somewhat active Tuesday and Wednesday of
next week as several short waves move through the flow. This will
keep a lid on afternoon highs with readings in the 40s and 50s.
Lows will be in the 20s and 30s. Winds will be breezy during the
afternoon hours.
