Public Information Statement
National Weather Service Cheyenne, WY
739 PM MDT Fri May 11 2018

Damage consistent with straight-line winds was observed across
south central Morrill County by a NWS assessment team on Friday,
05/11/18. These straight-line winds occurred in an area of the
supercell thunderstorm called the rear flank downdraft. The
beginning location of damage was surveyed near the Highway 385 and
Highway 92 interchange, where a tractor-trailer was overturned
and one unsecured mobile home was tipped. Farther east along
Highway 92, a large farm implement storage shed was completely
destroyed. The damage path of straight-line winds continued into
Broadwater, Nebraska where significant tree damage was assessed.
Numerous irrigation center-pivots were tipped along with many
downed power poles. It is important to note that the damage pattern
in all of these cases was from the west towards the east, consistent
with straight line wind damage. There was no indication of a
rotational pattern in any of the damage that was surveyed. Even so,
brief tornadoes could still have occurred over open prairie with
this thunderstorm, they just did not produce any damage and thus was
not able to be assessed.
