Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Las Vegas NV
105 PM PDT Sat Apr 20 2024

.SYNOPSIS...High pressure will bring very warm temperatures through
Monday. Low pressure approaching Southern California will bring
breezy afternoon southwest winds Monday and Tuesday, followed by a
cooling trend and chances for showers late in the week into next
weekend.
&&

.SHORT TERM...through Tuesday night.

Warm weather will persist through Tuesday with temperatures peaking
around 15 degrees above normal Sunday and Monday. This is due to an
area of high pressure over the Southwest U.S. which will begin to
move to the east late Monday ahead of an Eastern Pacific trough
approaching southern California by Tuesday night.

Limited moisture and instability over the southern Sierra may lead
to an isolated shower or thunderstorm moving off the peaks and over
the southern half of the Owens Valley late this afternoon.
Elsewhere, fair weather cumulus over the mountains of southern
Nevada and northwest Arizona and some passing cirrus will produce a
little sun blockage or filtering. Fewer clouds can be expected
Sunday and Monday as temperatures climb 2-3 degrees each day.
Afternoon south-southwest winds gusting 20-30 mph Monday will
enhance mixing and lead to the warmest day of the season so far.
Height falls associated with the aforementioned approaching trough
will result in high temps pulling back 4-6 degrees Tuesday as gusty
south-southwest winds redevelop in the afternoon.

.LONG TERM...Wednesday through Saturday.

Cooler and gustier conditions remain the expectation in the long
term period, though there is considerable uncertainty within the
finer details. A southern stream shortwave and a stronger northern
stream disturbance will phase together in some fashion by late in
the week, though phasing storm systems like this are typically not
well resolved by our numerical models. On Wednesday, a
southwesterly flow aloft will prevail with above normal temperatures
and breezy conditions in the afternoon. However, as troughing
approaches on Thursday temperatures will cool closer to normal and
breezy to windy conditions will overspread much of the region. The
primary trough axis looks to move through the area on Friday or
Saturday, which will mark the coolest days of the week. There has
also been indications that some anomalous moisture will get wrapped
into this storm system which may bring some shower activity to the
region, especially across our northern zones.

.AVIATION...For Harry Reid...Light winds around 7 knots will
continue through Sunday with easterly components in the afternoon
and southwest components in the overnight hours. Fair weather
cumulus with bases around 12 kft AGL will develop in the afternoon
over the Spring Mountains and Sheep Range.

For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast
California...VFR conditions and diurnal winds generally less than 10
knots can be expected across the region through Sunday. Fair weather
cumulus will develop over the mountains in the afternoon hours with
bases around 14-15 kft MSL.
&&

.SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT...Spotters are encouraged to report
