Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Elko NV
237 AM PDT Thu Mar 28 2024

.SYNOPSIS...A weather disturbance and cold front will bring breezy
conditions along with valley rain and higher elevation snow to the
area today. Active weather will continue well into the weekend
with widespread rain and snow. The potential for heavy snow
exists Saturday night through Sunday across portions of northern
and central Nevada. Quieter weather arrives next week with a big
warmup back into the 60s for highs by midweek.

&&

.SHORT TERM...Today through Friday night

A cold front and attendant rain and snow will make progress
southeastward across the state today, reaching White Pine county
by this afternoon. Instability ahead of the front could bring a
few thunderstorms to White Pine county this afternoon. Snowfall
will be highest in mountain locations with the Ruby Mountains
receiving up to 10 inches of additional snow through late this
morning. Model guidance suggests the cold front stalling in
southwest Utah tonight before beginning to lift back northward as
a warm front Friday in advance of a stronger low pressure system
that approaching the California coast. Higher precipitation totals
are expected across the eastern third of Nevada Friday with snow
levels remaining steadily through the day so combined with daytime
heating, impacts from snow in valleys will be minimal. However,
passes above 6500 feet could still see one to inches of snow.

Winds will be elevated today from the west-southwest at 10-20 mph
with gusts approaching 30 mph in some areas. Temperatures today
and Friday will be mainly in the 40s for highs with lows dropping
into the 20s and 30s tonight with mainly 30s for Friday night.

.LONG TERM...Saturday through next Thursday

Low pressure system over southwestern U.S. continues to move
eastward and is expected to continue to give light rain/snow
showers over the weekend. Chances for precipitation across central
and northern Nevada expected to remain 50-80%. By Sunday
afternoon, chances are expected to dissipate to below 10%.
Temperatures both days expected to have highs in the 40s to 50s
from the cooler air that is associated with this low pressure
system. Lows also expected to be cooler into the 20s. Breezy winds
expected each day at 10-20 mph with two different directions.
Saturday, northeasterly winds over Humboldt County and southerly
winds across central Nevada. Sunday the wind directions is
expected to shift with northerly winds over northern Nevada and
southwesterly winds in central Nevada.

Monday through Wednesday is expected to see drier and calmer
weather as an upper level ridge moves over southwestern U.S. right
after the upper level low moves east. The ridge is expected to
bring warmer temperatures which will gradually rise, with highs
starting in the 40s to 50s, and raise into the 60s by Wednesday.
Lows also expected to gradually rise from 20s to 30s Monday, into
the upper 30s by Wednesday. Breezy winds of 10-15 mph expected
each afternoon.

Thursday, models are showing another round of weather heading
towards the western U.S. however there is low confidence on the
position of the system. Models are showing that temperatures could
drop from this cold front and winds increasing. We will be
monitoring as the days get closer on the progression of this
system.

.AVIATION...Showers across northern NV early this morning
associated with the passage of a cold front, then dry at KWMC
KBAM and KEKO later this morning and afternoon. The frontal
boundary will reach KELY around 18-19Z with showers through the
afternoon. KTPH will likely remain dry today. VFR conditions are
expected with the frontal passage, although brief periods of MVFR
are possible in any heavier rain showers, or if the air mass is
cooler than expected and showers end up as snow. Winds today will
be southwesterly, generally sustained 10-15kts gusting 20-25kts.
